Sprouting Farms seeks to develop new and existing farm businesses and increase local food production in the New and Greenbrier River Valleys by laying the groundwork for sustainable farm businesses.

Sprouting Farms is a 501c3 non-profit located in Summers Co, WV, that supports a place-based economic transition in Central Appalachia by scaling up sustainable agriculture and economic development programs to create jobs in economically distressed communities. Our programs provide farm business training and resources and build the regional markets necessary to launch, support, and enable farm businesses.
A 2014 USDA grant funded a business plan, which launched Sprouting Farms after receiving ARC POWER grant in 2017. Sprouting Farms builds farm businesses through five approaches:(1) training aligned with market opportunities, (2) equipment and resources,(3) providing access to farmland through tunnel and land leases, (4) operating a food hub (Turnrow) and (5) creating workforce opportunities in the agriculture sector. Our programs/initiatives include a production and training/incubating farm located in Talcott, WV, FDA processing kitchen in Greenville, WV, statewide food hub operated in partnership with several other local food and farming nonprofits, statewide food access program with a mobile market for Summers, Monroe, Greenbrier co preparing to launch in 2021, and aquaponics facility in Kermit, WV. We see a future where local food is served not just at home but also in schools and institutions, in local grocery stores, and throughout our community. We hope to create fair employment opportunities and encourage farm planning for sustainable production. |
We envision a future where there are new and beginning farmers thriving in the New and Greenbrier River Valley regions.
|
We want these farmers to have access to the key business education and training needed to support their farm endeavors.
|
We wish to help these individuals access land and growing space to build their assets, capital, and farm business.
